2016 summary
1: What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?

-I finished my first complete comics series. One that didn’t get dropped before the entire story was told. That was certainly a first.
-Oh yeah I joined a comics authors’ union (and it didn’t go too well, in the sense that I was pretty useless there)
-I tried to go vegetarian, or at least flexitarian. It’s not all completely going according to plan, but I’m making a lot of efforts. I cut off dairy products as well, more for digestion reasons than anything else, and that at least was a success.
-shotgun convention, where I made a fanzine, printed only a limited number of copies out, and sold everything in one day at a convention. It was the best idea ever.
-X-rayed my feet
-got sort of hit on in an onsen in Japan by a drunken lady ; it was really funny
-Also I obtained my 10-years immigration card !
-And there was a certain trip I went on but more on that below

2: Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

To tell the truth I kept none of them. One of them was : be more responsible, and I really don’t think I’ve achieved that. Also, « keep my bedroom clean as much as possible » and… hahaha. Yeah. No.

3: Did anyone close to you give birth?

OMG yes and it was the weirdest shit ever. Because it was a childhood friend to whom I can’t say I’m super close, exactly, but we get along really well, we’re somehow very alike and we’ve followed very similar paths in life… up to this point. So when her baby was born I was super weirded out, because it felt like it was something that had happened to me in an alternate universe, and on some level I felt sorry for me ? Like, the alternate universe me who had a baby ? Because I’m pretty sure it ruined her life as much as it would have ruined mine. Anyway. Super bizarre.

4: Did anyone close to you die?

No

5: What countries did you visit?

JAPAN. Trip of a lifetime. Felt a little weird at first because of all the expectations and fantasies I used to have about it. And when I arrived I didn’t take enough time to recover from jetlag so in the first few days I was kind of tired and depressed, but in retrospect it was a very good trip, even the times where I was off my tits with jetlag

I also went back to Mauritius in the summer but that’s not really the important part, that was just the usual with my family doing their best to get on my nerves.

6: What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?

Enough money to clear my debts… ? Also a published book, I didn’t have one this year.

7: What dates from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

18th of April, in Japan, where HunterxHunter was published in the Shônen Jump. It was very emotional for me.
And the few days I spent in Miyajima. It was so magical and out of this world.

8: What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Definitely completing my comics series Rhapsody, and also the third volume of Geek & Girly. It was huge for me. And that fanzine I managed to print and sell almost all by myself.

9: What was your biggest failure?

Completely failed to be more responsible as I said before
Haven’t sent my novel to a publisher, haven’t finished my other novel either. I haven’t lost hope or will to do so, I just need more time.

10: Did you suffer illness or injury?

In March I hurt my back pretty badly somehow, just before going to Japan which, if I hadn’t met the very best physiotherapist in Paris who completely cured me after only a few sessions, the whole trip would have been a real goddamn bitch, what with all the horrible futons I had to sleep on throughout the country.
In Miyajima I managed to hurt my knee while climbing down a mountain, which again would have been a bitch for the rest of my trip if I hadn’t gone to see a Japanese physical therapist who didn’t speak a word of English. The conversation in my shitty Japanese and gibberish will be something I’ll remember for the years to come (here’s another first : going to see the doctor in Japan)

11: What was the best thing you bought?

God I bought tons of shit this year.
I bought a beautiful knife in Japan that I use every day in the kitchen and it makes me happy.

A San Junipero t-shirt.
A hairpin in the shape of a silver laurel branch to make me feel like a Roman emperor.

12: Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Evgenia Medvedeva, fangirl extraordinaire
And George Michael who apparently donated millions to charity unbeknownst to the rest of the world, and also worked anonymously in a shelter for homeless people. Top guy.

13: Whose behaviour made you appalled?

Boris Johnson’s (I don’t know if « appalled »’s quite the term but the dude sure reached new levels of crook politician. Which made me formulate some interesting theories about today’s politicians in general).
And our fucking governement’s all year long.

14: Where did most of your money go?

In my trip to Japan XD
And nerd shirts and trinkets

15: What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Okay, I’m repeating myself a lot, but going to Japan was such an adventure ! I can’t even describe my state of mind when I was on the plane. One of the weirdest weird-outs ever, with a sense of unreality I've scarcely felt before.

16: What song will always remind you of 2016?

Mitski’s songs.

17: Compared to this time last year, are you: (a) happier or sadder? (b) thinner or fatter? © richer or poorer?

Neutral (2014 was so shit that I was much, much happier in 2015 if only in comparison, so since this year was quite okay following 2015, I don’t know if I’m happier, not really sadder either. I’m mostly okay. I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad), probably fatter, and er, neutral. I have a bit of money but the taxes next year are gonna be super steep and I still haven’t reimbursed my debts.

18: What do you wish you’d done more of?

Like last year, I wish I'd read more books.
I should have gone swimming more, in the sea and at the swimming-pool.
Also I wish I’d gone to London but I was very spoiled travel-wise anyway.

19: What do you wish you’d done less of?

Running away from responsibilities and generally being a big baby.

20: How did you spend Christmas?

Cleaning up the bathroom and my bedroom – that was actually my Christmas gift from me to myself XD
I took a splendid bath with candles and a Lush bathbomb in the sparkly clean tub, I ate good food and I watched Christmas movies. I thought I’d be alone, unfortunately my roommate was there like last year, but it was still a very quiet Christmas, which is great.

21: Did you fall in love in 2016?

Multiple times ; never acted on it. It doesn’t matter anyway, I think I’m better off alone generally speaking.

22: What was your favourite TV program?

Does Haikyuu !! count as a TV program ? If not, Black Mirror was definitely a highlight. And Brooker’s 2016 Wipe, of course.

23: Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No one comes to mind right now.

24: What was the best book you read?

Andy Weir’s The Martian. Good shit.

25: What was your greatest musical discovery?

Mitski.

26: What did you want and get?

Two things : my immigration card, and my trip to Japan.

27: What did you want and not get?

Some peace

28: What was your favourite film of this year?

The Handmaiden by Park Chan-Wook in the strict sense of « film », as in « came out in theaters », but if we include Black Mirror’s San Junipero in the definition of « film », then definitely San Junipero.

29: What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

My art got better and I produced a lot more of it this year. ALSO I quit the shitty magazine I used to work for, which left me TONS of free time to do more stuff ! Excellent decision well done me 10/10

30: How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?

Nerd Swag.

31: What kept you sane?

Fanfiction, as ever. Also I was SO materialistic this year, I bought tons of useless shit just to give in to my impulses. It did made me happy though

32: Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I love Evgenia Medvedeva so much ??? (but she’s super young so I can’t really say I « fancy » her)

33: What political issue stirred you the most?

Brexit was WILD. It’s not very funny for people who are suffering the consequences in England, but every day and every piece of news about it was a complete circus. Trump’s election sure was a shock, but in my opinion Brexit took the cake. I was also the only one among my friends who was concerned about the issue and was reading up a lot on it, so when it happened I wasn’t taken by surprise and I could analyze the causes and consequences and see the bigger picture. Which is also why I wasn’t quite as surprised when Trump was elected (doesn’t mean I wasn’t depressed about it, though) : both have the same origins (fun fact : they’re the direct consequences of Thatcherism and Reaganism). So yeah, I’d say Brexit, definitely.

34: Who did you miss?

I’ve dreamed about the same person at least three times. I should probably take it as a sign but I don’t believe in signs and I don’t want to act on it.

35: Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016.

-Take pleasure in what you do, no matter if you receive the right amount of appreciation for it or not.
-Love yourself if no one else will.
-Don’t drink and Bee movie.

Also, given enough time and the lack of supervision it incessantly asks for, capitalism will end up eating itself.

36: Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

"Honey you’re familiar
Like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison
Chivalry fell on its sword
Innocence died screaming
Honey ask me I should know" (From Eden, by Hozier)

And also :
« I’m holding my breath with a baseball bat
Though I don’t know what I’m waiting for I’m
Not gonna be
What my daddy wants me to be » (Townie, by Mitski)
